June 26, 2017

I feel it has been so long since I have last posted.

I got caught up in the daily grind of managing clients and running a business. (I know, I know, excuses)

To be honest, I was actually refining and planning.

I was refining my current processes and planning what it is that I actually want to achieve by the end of the year since almost 50% of 2017 is gone.

Thinking about what have I done up until now, what am I doing today, and what am I going to do tomorrow…

These are tough questions to ask because they involve a lot of “thinking.”

Thinking as opposed to doing.

In most cases, we think about what we would like to do and by when.

We try to set goals and use our planners to make sure we get them done.

We’ll sync our online calendars with our phones so we get reminders on what we should actually be doing.

But in most cases, we either lose our way and lose sight of what it is that we actually wanted.

We make our goals way to rigid and focus on getting that task.

Then some unforeseeable event occurs and throws our plans out the window.

You can plan a pretty picnic but you can’t predict the weather.

It happens to the best of us including myself.

The past two weeks were a lost of focusing on what it is that I actually want to achieve and why.

We all know about S.M.A.R.T goals but to me, I’ve never really found them to be smart.

More of a pain in the butt going through the checklist ensuring that they were specific and measurable.

Too rigid for what I find my life turns out to be.

For me, I realize that there is more than one way to get to your destination.

Some are short, some are long, some are fast, some are slow.

Like a GPS.

So creating a specific goal kind of contradicts what I know to be true.

So how to we create these “goals” and actually get stuff done?

Well, goals are not what we should be focusing on.

When I hear the word “goal” I automatically think of sports and this is where this analogy is going to come in.

You see, sports teams do not focus on goals, they focus on championships.

You need to score more goals or touchdowns than your opponent in order to win a game. If you win enough games then eventually you’ll win the championship.

The goal is not the outcome, the goal is what you have to do to get to the outcome.

Score enough goals and you’ll win a championship.

What sports teams also do is once they win the championship, they celebrate!

They all end up going to Disney World, champagne bottles popping, cheers, everyone is full of energy and excitement.

Why do they do that?

Because they sacrificed so much to get there. A year’s worth of training and hard work, time away from the family, injuries, and countless other unforeseeable events.

They celebrate because they overcame it all.

In the same sense, you need to do that for yourself….

We already know who our opponent is….every day it is the same person….you.

So from there, figure out what your championship is.

Then every day, when you wake up, make sure you are scoring more goals than your opponent….if not, your opponent wins.

Score more goals, win more games, bring home the championship.

And when you win it, celebrate it….because you deserve it.

That way you are ready for the next for the next championship.

Figure out what your championship game is, win enough games by out scoring your opponent and celebrate the victories.

Keep on keeping on.
